Who Is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit can feel confusing at first, especially if you grew up hearing people talk about the Spirit in a way that sounded mysterious or strange.

But the Bible is actually clear: the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force. He is God. He is the third person of the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

And for followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit is not far away. He is God’s presence with us and in us.

The Holy Spirit Is God

In Acts 5, Peter confronts a man named Ananias for lying. Peter says Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, and then says he lied to God.

That matters. The Holy Spirit is not less than God. He is not a symbol for God’s energy. He is God.

Jesus also speaks about the Holy Spirit as a person. He says the Spirit teaches, reminds, guides, speaks, and helps. You cannot grieve an idea. You cannot be led by an abstract force. The Holy Spirit is personal.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Know Jesus

One of the main things the Holy Spirit does is point us to Jesus.

Jesus said:

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things. (John 14:26)

The Holy Spirit helps us understand Scripture. He convicts us when we are drifting. He reminds us of what Jesus said. He makes the truth of God feel alive in our hearts, not just written on a page.

That does not mean every feeling is the Holy Spirit. But it does mean God has not left us to figure out faith by ourselves.

The Holy Spirit Gives Us Power

Before Jesus ascended, he told his disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit.

You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses. (Acts 1:8)

That promise was fulfilled at Pentecost in Acts 2. The Spirit filled the disciples, and ordinary people became bold witnesses for Jesus.

That is still what the Holy Spirit does. He gives courage. He gives wisdom. He gives spiritual gifts for serving others. He helps the church become more than a group of people trying hard. He empowers the church to carry the life of Jesus into the world.

The Holy Spirit Changes Us

The Holy Spirit does not only give gifts. He also forms character.

Galatians 5 describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

That is what God is growing in us.

Christian growth is not just behavior management. It is not just trying to be a better person. The Spirit works in us from the inside out, making us more like Jesus over time.

The Holy Spirit Helps Us Pray

There are moments when you do not know what to pray.

Romans 8 says the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes for us. That is so comforting. God is not disappointed when you do not have the right words. The Holy Spirit meets you there.

Sometimes prayer is clear and confident. Sometimes it is quiet and messy. Either way, the Spirit helps us come to the Father through Jesus.

God Is With You

The Holy Spirit is not an optional add-on to the Christian life. He is the presence of God with his people.

He teaches us. He guides us. He comforts us. He gives gifts. He produces fruit. He points us back to Jesus again and again.

So if you belong to Jesus, you are not alone. God is with you by his Spirit.
