What Does the Bible Say About Forgiveness?
Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful parts of the Christian faith, and also one of the hardest.
It sounds simple until you are the one who has been hurt.
The Bible takes forgiveness seriously because God takes sin seriously, and because God has forgiven us so much in Jesus.
God Forgives Us in Jesus
Christian forgiveness begins with what God has done for us.
Ephesians 1 says that in Jesus we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.
That is not small. God does not ignore our sin. Jesus carries it. At the cross, mercy and justice meet.
So when we talk about forgiving others, we are not starting with our own strength. We are starting with the mercy we have received.
Forgiveness Is Not Pretending
Forgiveness does not mean what happened was okay.
It does not mean you have to deny pain, excuse evil, or instantly rebuild trust.
Sometimes people confuse forgiveness with pretending. The Bible does not ask us to live in denial. Jesus is full of grace and truth.
Forgiveness tells the truth about the wound, but it refuses to let bitterness become the boss of your heart.
Forgiveness Releases Revenge
Romans 12 says not to take revenge, but to leave room for God’s justice.
That is part of what forgiveness does. It hands judgment back to God.
That does not mean there are no consequences. It does not mean boundaries are unspiritual. It means we stop trying to become the judge, jury, and executioner of someone else’s life.
God is better at justice than we are.
Forgiveness Can Be a Process
Sometimes forgiveness is a decision. Sometimes it is a process you have to keep bringing back to God.
Jesus told Peter to forgive again and again. That does not mean staying in harm’s way. It means forgiveness is not always finished in one emotional moment.
Some wounds need prayer, time, counsel, and honest healing.
Forgiven People Forgive
Colossians 3 says:
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
That is the heart of it.
We forgive because we have been forgiven. We show mercy because we have received mercy. We release others because Jesus has released us.
Bring the Hurt to God
If forgiveness feels impossible, start there. Tell God the truth.
You do not have to fake spiritual maturity. You can say, “Lord, I want to forgive, but I need help.”
God meets us in that honest place.
Forgiveness is not weakness. It is freedom. And Jesus can help you walk into it one step at a time.
