How to Pray
Prayer can feel intimidating if you think you have to get the words exactly right.
But prayer is not a performance. It is a conversation with God.
You can pray simply. You can pray honestly. You can pray when you feel strong, and you can pray when you barely know what to say.
Prayer Is Talking With God
At its simplest, prayer is talking with God.
Psalm 145 says the Lord is near to all who call on him in truth.
That means you do not have to clean yourself up before you come to God. You come to him honestly.
Prayer can include worship, thanks, confession, requests, silence, tears, and listening. It is a relationship, not a script.
Jesus Taught Us to Pray
In Matthew 6, Jesus gave his disciples a model prayer. We often call it the Lord’s Prayer.
It begins with worship:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. (Matthew 6:9)
Then it moves into surrender, daily needs, forgiveness, and spiritual protection.
That is a helpful pattern: start with who God is, bring him your needs, ask for forgiveness, forgive others, and trust him with your life.
Be Honest With God
Some people think prayer has to sound polished. The Bible says otherwise.
The Psalms are full of honest prayers. Joy, anger, fear, grief, confession, gratitude - all of it shows up before God.
God is not helped by religious language that hides your heart. He invites the real you.
If you are tired, say that. If you are thankful, say that. If you are afraid, say that. If you need help, ask.
Pray About Everything
Philippians 4 says:
In every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
Every situation means every situation.
Nothing is too big for God, and nothing is too small for him to care about.
Listen and Be Still
Prayer is not only talking.
Sometimes we need to slow down long enough to listen. God often speaks through Scripture, through the Holy Spirit’s prompting, through wise counsel, and through peace that lines up with his Word.
Silence can feel awkward at first, but it can become a gift.
Start Where You Are
If you do not know how to pray, start small.
“God, help me.” “Jesus, I need you.” “Father, thank you.” “Lord, show me what to do.”
You do not have to impress God. You can come to him like a child comes to a father.
He hears you.
